Piece of the month

December 2007

No, I haven't given up glass engraving, but the paintings on silk seem to be the best examples of something new.

To close out 2007, I'll give you the latest...seahorse on black.

Merry Christmas everyone!

November 2007

This month there was an exposition titled "Frida inspires the Mexican Caribbean". Liliana organized the event to celebrate 100 years since the birth of Frida Kahlo, a famous mexican painter. I decided to enter with a painting on silk, my largest yet, measuring 24" x 30". It's called "El Latido" (the heartbeat), and was inspired by one of Frida's paintings using a heart.

October 2007

This month I didn't do much engraving, instead I painted the house. A lot of work, but worth it.

We now have a little more color on the block.

and the back...

September 2007

Well, while dodging hurricanes, I did manage to make a new hanging lamp.

Also, it appears that it has already found a home...

Here in Cozumel they call September "septihambre" (the month of hunger).

I will probably be closing the gallery for two weeks to paint the house.

August 22nd, 2007

Hurricane Dean hit 100 miles to the south of us as a catagory 5 hurricane. We were spared.

August 19th, 2007

This is a mid-month-pre-hurricane report. It looks like Hurricane Dean is heading to Cozumel. There is still the hope that it won't arrive direct, but it doesn't look good. So, I wanted to show this piece while I still had the chance. It is a cameo engraving on white and black glass about the Mayan game of Pelota. When they played certain solstice games, the losers were sacrificed. Rough sport! Anyway, here it is...

...and wish us luck with Dean.

August 2007

This month I would like to show you what is so far my favorite silk painting .

Also, all of the vessels I made at the Museum of Glass are now online, and for sale.

July 2007

I spent the month of june in the States. I taught a class at Pilchuck Glass School. I believe there are some new engravers in the world. I wish them the best.

Then I was at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA for a week as the visiting artist. I had an incredible experience there. The glassblowing team, and the entire staff of the museum were awesome.

I would like to extend my thanks to all them.

The image below is a detail shot of a large vase called "Turtle Mambo".

June 2007

I am posting June a little early, as I am heading to the US to teach at Pilchuck, see my sister, and then a week long stint as "visiting artist" at the Museum of Glass in Tacoma, WA.

This month I would like to show my 22 paintings on silk that I exhibited in my show "Art in Red" at Galería Azul

on the 17th of May.

Instead of filling this page, I'll give you a sneak preview...

May 2007

I am glad April is over. The month was a strange one, but I did manage to create this beauty...

and when you turn the light on...

April 2007

This month I will introduce two of the silk paintings that I made in March.

One of them is an illuminated painting.

I would like to thank again Mark Mizener for sharing his painting technique with me.

Comments welcome...

February and March 2007

I was very busy this month organizing a Humane Society Art Auction and a first ever painter exhibition in the gallery. Mark Mizener painted 13 views of Cozumel's east side and we exhibited them in the gallery.

Opening night was great and hope to do more similar events in the future.

To view Mark's paintings, click here.

While Mark was here, he taught me how to paint on silk, which I find myself enjoying.

Here's an example of one of my first attempts...

January 2007

I will begin 2007 showing a piece that is a work in progress. There is still lot's to engrave on this piece, and then it will be set in a wooden frame. The piece is about the Mayan game called "juego de pelota".

I will show the completed piece when it's done.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
